By: Press    Publish Date: 7/17/2006 5:19:00 PM

Justin Leone hit his 14th home run, and Jon Knott and Terrmel Sledge each had RBI doubles as the Portland Beavers prevailed for a 4-3 victory over the Tacoma Rainiers before 7,464 Sunday afternoon at PGE Park.

The win gave the Beavers (44-50) a 3-1 series victory over the second-place Rainiers (51-41).

The Beavers drew 33,226 over the course of their four-game series with the Rainiers, an average of 8,307 fans per game. The team moved over the quarter-million mark for attendance Sunday and is averaging 5,002 fans a game through 50 home dates.

The Beavers, trailing by a run, regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Bobby Hill singled to lead it off, eventually scoring to tie the game at 3-3 on a double to center by Sledge. Paul McAnulty’s sac fly then scored Manny Alexander, who followed Hill with a single to right.

Jim Brower (4-2) got the win after two scoreless innings of relief. Scott Cassidy, who joined the Beavers Sunday, worked the ninth for his first save.

Tacoma starter Bobby Livingston (5-6) gave up four runs on 10 hits over 6 1/3 innings to take the loss.

After McAnulty reached on a two-out single in the first, Knott doubled to left-center as Portland got out to a quick 1-0 lead.

Leone’s solo homer in the fourth doubled the lead, but Tacoma went on top with a solo home run from Ismael Castro and a two-run shot from Scott Youngbauer in the fifth. Both home runs came off starter Jared Wells, who came into the game having allowed just four home runs over his previous 85 2/3 innings this season.

The Beavers begin a four-game series at Tucson Monday at 7 p.m.

NOTES: The Beavers have homered in 12 straight games … it was the Beavers’ first series victory since June 16-19 … Brower has allowed just one run over his last 12 innings … Cassidy joined the team Sunday after being optioned by San Diego on Friday.
